Opinion: Prom Guidelines Change

Opinion: Prom Guidelines Change

By: Abigail Trevino

How would you feel if your boyfriend or girlfriend couldn’t attend PROM because they graduated earlier than you? Or, maybe this is happening to you. It’s frustrating because they could still be 18 and still can’t go because the prom guidelines say that you must still be in high school. It’s unfair that seniors CAN’T bring their significant other who recently graduated, but a senior CAN bring a freshman who has a four-year age gap. To see how others felt on this topic, I interviewed others from the high school. One girl said, “I think that limiting guest passes to just high schoolers is kind of unfair. They should let last year's graduates be eligible for guest passes. It's not like they graduated a super long time ago or anything; most of them are the same ages as the seniors this year”. I don’t see why the guidelines suddenly changed after decades. I see that the times are changing, so rules need to change too; but they should be extended to at least students who graduated last year. I asked random people in my classes their opinion on the topic as well, and they said they might not go because none of their high school friends are able to go. However, if the guideline was slightly extended to recent high school graduates, then I feel there would be a better turnout of students going to prom.
